What Is Drywall?
Drywall, also known as sheetrock or plasterboard, is a material used to create walls and ceilings. It consists of a gypsum core sandwiched between two sheets of paper. Drywall is a relatively easy material to work with, which is why it is a popular choice for do-it-yourself projects.
However, before you install your drywall, there are a few things you need to know. The first is the purpose of the drywall. Are you using it to create an interior wall or ceiling? The second is the type of drywall you need.
There are various different types of drywall depending on the project you’re working on. For example, there’s even a fire-resistant drywall for use in kitchens and bathrooms. Once you know the purpose and type of drywall you need, you can move on to the installation process.
Types Of Drywall and Their Purpose
There are four main types of drywall: regular, fire-resistant, soundproof, and moisture-resistant. As the name suggests, regular drywall is the most common type. It’s typically used for interior walls and ceilings in homes and businesses.
Fire-resistant drywall has a special fire-retardant gypsum core. It’s often used in kitchens and bathrooms, as well as in laundry rooms and commercial buildings. Soundproof drywall reduces noise transmission. It’s often used in apartment buildings and office complexes.
Moisture-resistant drywall has a water-resistant paper facing. It’s often used in areas where there is high humidity, such as basements and laundry rooms.
Here are 5 things to know before installing drywall in your home or office.
1. Choose the Right Type
The type of drywall you use will depend on the project you’re working on. Be sure to choose the right type of drywall for your needs.
2. Budget Accordingly
Fire-resistant, soundproof, and moisture-resistant drywall types are more expensive than regular drywall. However, they may be worth the investment depending on your project.
3. Budget Your Time Well
Drywall is a relatively easy material to work with. However, it’s important to take your time and do a good job if you want a professional finish.
4. Gather the Right Tools
You’ll need some basic tools for drywall installation, including a hammer, screwdriver, tape measure, level, and saw.
5. Use the Right Technique
Hang the drywall sheets horizontally on the wall. Start at the bottom and work your way up. Use screws to attach the drywall to the studs in the wall.
You may need help with this project, so make sure to determine your needs first.
Tools and Materials Needed for Installing Drywall
Installing drywall is a relatively simple process. However, there are a few tools and materials you’ll need to get the job done. Here’s a list of what you’ll need:
- Tape measure
- Drywall saw
- Utility knife
- Plywood or OSB boards (for attaching the drywall to the studs)
- Drywall screws (1-1/4 to 2 inches long)
- Drywall nails (1-1/4 to 2 inches long)
- Drywall adhesive
- Drywall tape
- Joint compound
- Sandpaper
- Ruler or level
- Tongs (for lifting the drywall)
Drywall Checklist
Before you start your drywall project, run through this checklist to make sure you’re prepared. Here are some general things that need to happen before you start:
- Complete and inspect all electrical wiring and plumbing
- Install all insulation
- Make sure the floor is level
- Install all doors and windows
- Complete and inspect framings
- Tape and mud all corners, seams, and nail heads
- Apply primer to all surfaces
- Cut drywall to size using a drywall saw
Installing Drywall
Now that you have all the tools and materials you need, you’re ready to install new drywall. The first step is to measure the area where you’ll be hanging the drywall. Then, use a drywall saw to cut the pieces of drywall to size.
Next, use a utility knife to score the paper facing on the back of the drywall. This will make it easier to snap the drywall into place. Once you’ve cut and scored the drywall, it’s time to attach it to the studs. You can do this with either drywall screws or nails.
If you’re using screws, predrill the holes to make sure the screw doesn’t split the drywall. Start at the bottom of the wall and work your way up. Make sure to space the screws evenly (about 12 inches apart).
If you’re using nails, start at the top of the wall and work your way down. Again, make sure to space the nails evenly (about 12 inches apart).
Once the drywall is attached to the studs, it’s time to apply the adhesive. Spread a layer of adhesive on the back of each piece of drywall. Then, press the drywall into place. Make sure to wipe away any excess adhesive.
Now it’s time to tape the joints. Start by spreading a layer of joint compound over the seams. Then, press the drywall tape into the joint compound. Use a putty knife to smooth out the tape.
Once all the joints are taped, spread another layer of joint compound over the tape. Allow the joint compound to dry for 24 hours before sanding it smooth.
